Job was a good and godly man who, through no fault of his own, lost everything: house, family, and health. But even amid this great suffering, Job refused to abandon his faith in God—though he had lots of questions. If you are walking through a valley of your own, you may resonate with Job and find comfort in his raw emotions and reflections. The message of Job is concerned with the way God is actively involved in our hopes, joys, and fears.

The word genesis means “origins.” This book shows us about the origins of the world and of God’s people, Israel. If you are asking some of the big questions in life, it can be helpful to go back to the beginning. Studying Genesis helps us understand the world we live in, and shows us how God began his plan to mend this broken world. Genesis shows us what God is like—that he is eternal, powerful, perfect; the creator and giver of life. He is also personal and has made human beings in his image, to have a close relationship with him.

If you are new or returning to faith, John is a good book to study. In the Gospel of John, Jesus teaches us about himself. Some say it is the most personal of the Gospel accounts. By the end of John’s Gospel, we must make a decision about Jesus Christ. One way or the other, the Jesus whom John presents demands a response. John writes “so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name” (20:31).
The book of Psalms was and is the songbook of the Jewish people. It contains primarily songs of praise to God for his creation, redemption, help, forgiveness, and kingship. Psalms is a great book to study, particularly during a time of uncertainty, transition, or change. God is steady and constant, and worshiping him reminds us of this truth. The most dominant theme in Psalms is the sovereignty of God, the great King over all the earth, who rules everything and can therefore answer every request and deal with every situation, who is righteous and good, and whose Kingdom will surely be established.
